Adding Active Directory (AD) group to SharePoint Audience

Audiences in SharePoint are a great way to change the appearance of sites depending on user membership of a audience. You can make webparts on the site appear or disappear and much more, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261958.aspx for more information.

Current I was testing audiences and did hit the problem that I could not add any active directory group to the audience I did create.

Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Service Applications > User Profile Service Application > [People] Manage Audience

You don’t need to add the owner if you do manage the audience from Central Administration, when you want others to be able to manage a specific audience add them as owner.

After clicking ok select Member Of as Operator to be able to select Windows Groups by clicking the address book icon. (When you look close you can see the group Icon has changed a little showing you to be able to select windows groups.

In Active Directory I created AD Group that I want to use: Audience.TestAudience The Account Arjan is member of the group.

So I entered bi as search string to search for the groups above and did get below result.

The first thing I could think of was that I did filter the profile synchronization to only get users from a specific OU in AD.

So first I changed the Synchronization connection to include the OU that holds the Audience.TestAudience group:

After changing the connection, restart the synchronization.

Wait until the synchronization services is IDLE again, have patience because this takes a while….

Now get back to adding a Windows group to the audience. Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Service Applications > User Profile Service Application > [People] Manage Audience

Click Ok on the first screen that appears and then Add rule

Select again the Member of operator.

Now after looking for the Audience group it’s found:

The added group is now added to the audience.

One little warning, when you did succeed in adding the group to audience but you find that new users added to the groups are not affected by the audience setting on sites you might need to do a full User Profile Synchronization instead of incremental.

Hope you enjoy this blog! When you have comments, better solution and recommendation I like to hear from you.
